Chapter Seventeen

Azaria

Ryver’s outburst pissed me off. Not because I took offense to his words, but because I was ripped from my conversation with Awilda. Of course, she would return to the Barizon. I didn’t think any Savage would willingly come to this land for any great length of time. And yet the announcement of her impending departure tore through me like an arrow.

I suppose for the day, it had been as if Phaedra were given back to me in some small way. The thought of giving it up so soon was unbearable. His outburst nearly caused me to have one of my own, so delicate was the moment.

She seemed undaunted by his barking—it may have even caused her to smile a little brighter.

“I shall try my best to right the Emperors concerns,” I assured. It was all I could do to shake my head. People in the distance were nodding and whispering feverishly. I guess the Emperor wasn’t the only one wagging his tongue over my womb.

Ryver’s hands slammed on the table, and he repeated the curse a bit louder before shoving his chair back and storming out. I locked my jaw, refusing to show any sign of emotion.

“Is there somewhere private we might speak, my Goddess?”

My breath caught, and I tried to think. If I went to the Queen’s chamber, Tatsy would be waiting. If I went to Ryver’s… who the fuck was I kidding? We weren’t going to Ryver’s bedchamber.

“Of course. In your bedchamber.” I smiled. With a tip of my head, I began to lead her towards the Foreign Dignitary suite. She was the second in command of the Barizon war council, the closest thing to a Savageland diplomat until I returned home. I held my head up and threw the door open for her. Before I entered, I cut my eyes towards each of the guards, daring them to speak against it.

When I turned to face her, I was greeted with a set of scrolls. The air was audibly knocked from me, and I stepped away as if they were serpents.

She laughed knowingly. “They are the ramblings of a mad man. A power-hungry parasite and nothing more. But you are right to be weary of things that arrive in twos. Your path is one of surprises, and most of them are twins. The death decree and betrothal announcement. The loss of your world, and the annulment of your destiny.” Her words gave me chills, and I danced my shoulders around until she laughed again.

“I thought only the marked men had full vision?” I asked.

She winked, taking her time to regard me from toe to crown before handing me the scrolls and walking away without a word. I had no doubt that I was now memorized in the mind of a warrior witch.

The paper scrunched in my hand while I fought the urge to burn it. It had to be the best option, but what if there was some threat that should be considered? Something with merit? Unrolling it, I began to sink down in front of the fancy fireplace.
